Dr Derek Stephens (Information Science) and other researchers at information science departments at City University London and Middlesex University are spearheading the development of methods for Data Intensive Visual Analytics (DIVA) through a project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL).

The £215,000 exploratory project investigates visual approaches for understanding and communicating dynamic, uncertain and frequently conflicting data that are derived from numerous sources.

The research team will develop methods for storing, communicating and utilising metadata about the data themselves and the processes used in their analysis and interpretation. They will focus on issues such as data origin, data quality and analytical process. The methods will use cutting edge visualization methods and be transferable and applicable at both operational and strategic levels in a number of domains that rely upon data intensive systems.
