Dr. Mark Hepworth, a senior lecturer at the Department of Information Science, chaired and facilitated the Standing Conference of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa Library and Information Associations (SCECSAL) pre-conference seminar in Botswana on ‘Strengthening Information Literacy Interventions: using creative approaches to teaching and learning’.

The seminar took place in the University of Botswana, Gaborone on the 5th December, 2010, with the aim of bringing people together who have been involved in information literacy interventions in the developing country context and share expertise and knowledge. The event was organised by the Information Training and Outreach Centre for Africa (ITOCA), the Institute of Development Studies and with funding from UKaid (the UK Department for International Development).

Talks during the seminar covered a range of areas including institutional change and embedding information literacy into institutions, pedagogical innovation and building capacity and the use of technology. Challenges facing information professionals across the globe such as student’s lack of use of available electronic resources and the lack of integration of information literacy in teaching and learning at an institutional level were also addressed.
